The Annual Secretary’s Dinner – Writeup

The Connaught Club Secretary’s Dinner took place this year at the iconic Buck’s Club; a particularly fitting choice, as it famously inspired P.G. Wodehouse’s ‘Drones Club’. Those familiar with Wodehouse’s works would have instantly appreciated the charm of this venue for our gathering! It also provided a splendid setting to honour W. Bro. Jake Mossom and his remarkable year as Secretary.

We were especially privileged to welcome R.W. Bro. Warren Duke MetGM, our Metropolitan Grand Master, a figure easily recognisable to all present (at least to those who hadn’t yet indulged in the Buck’s Fizz…). While the brethren knew a surprise was in store for this event, few anticipated it would be the presence of our new Metropolitan Grand Master, making for an especially memorable evening. R.W. Bro. Duke took time to speak personally with members, enquiring about their experience within the Club and, we trust, receiving warm and enthusiastic feedback!

As expected of a Connaught Club event, the evening featured exceptional dining. The staff at Buck’s ensured we were thoroughly well looked after, serving a delightful three-course meal. Following the starter, W. Bro. Jake Mossom delivered a reflective speech, touching upon the Connaught Club’s influential role within London Freemasonry. This theme was later taken up by the Metropolitan Grand Master, who shared his aspirations for the growth of Freemasonry in London, underscoring the Club’s vital contribution to fostering a vibrant and supportive social network for young Freemasons.

He also quipped that, having seen the condition of certain other Metropolitan Grand Officers after our famous Connaught Club Christmas Dinners, he was reassured that the ‘festive spirit’ of the Club remains very much alive!

With speeches concluded, toasts raised, and the evening’s labours brought to a harmonious close, the brethren departed to continue their revelries in classic Connaught Club fashion.

If you’re a young Mason in London looking to join in similar gatherings, we warmly invite you to get in touch—new members are always welcome!
